HERITAGE OF SARAWAK

GUNUNG MULU NATIONAL PARK - A UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE
Location: Miri
Gunung Mulu is Sarawak's largest national park (544 sq km), and also Malaysia's first World Heritage Area, a status it was awarded in 2000. It is most famous for its limestone cave systems, including the world's largest natural chamber (the Sarawak Chamber), the world's largest cave passage (Deer Cave) and the longest cave in Southeast Asia (Clearwater Cave). The park's main attractions are the four show caves (Wind, Clearwater, Deer and Langs Caves), all readily accessible by wooden walkways and paths. Other fascinating sights and activities include; a bat observatory; a 480m rainforest canopy skywalk (the world's longest tree-based walkway); adventure caving trips to some of Mulu's less accessible caves; the challenging Mulu Summit climb, the spectacular Pinnacles trail, and the historic Headhunter's trail through remote rainforest scenery.

Situated 100 km from the coast, the park is dominated by three mountains; Gunung Mulu (2,376m), Gunung Api (1,750m), and the as yet unconquered Gunung Benarat (1,585m). Gunung Mulu is sandstone, whilst Gunung Api and Gunung Benarat are formed from limestone and therefore have different geographical features. The summit of Gunung Mulu is covered by moss forests and stunted montane vegetation, whilst razor-sharp limestone pinnacles, some as high as 50 metres, are found on the upper slopes of Gunung Api. The park's forest ecosystems include peatswamp, heath, mixed dipterocarp, moss forest and montane vegetation; home to thousands of species of ferns, fungi, mosses and flowering plants, including 170 species of orchid and 10 species of pitcher plants, an impressive variety of mammals, birds (including 8 species of hornbill), frogs, fish and insects.

Mulu's wildlife is often heard but not seen, but visitors are almost certain to encounter bats, swiftlets, cave dwelling insects, snakes, lizards, tree frogs and an abundance of beautiful butterflies.

Visitors may not enter any of the caves or the Mulu Canopy Skywalk without a Park Guide. For most trails, including the Mulu Summit climb, the Pinnacles trail and the Headhunter's trail, a Park Guide is also mandatory. Bookings and payment of fees can be made at the park office. If you require a Park Guide you need to book the day before. During peak season, guides for popular activities such as the Pinnacles trail may be fully booked weeks in advance.

History of Sarawak

Sarawak - People and History

Little is known about the first inhabitants of Borneo. Human bones some 50,000 years old have been found in Sarawak, but these almost certainly did not belong to the ancestors of the present inhabitants. The indigenous peoples of Borneo speak languages belonging to the Austronesian family. The original Austronesians, perhaps originating in mainland Asia, became a maritime people who, several thousand years ago, began to expand across the Pacific and Indian oceans. Over time they founded hundreds of nations, and today their descendants can be found on Taiwan and in Malaysia, in the Phillipines and New Zealand, on Madagascar and Hawaii, and on countless islands in between.
Some three hundred years ago the territory that is now Sarawak came under the dominion of the Sultan of Brunei. Brunei was one of several Malay sultanates that had been established on the coast of Borneo in the preceding centuries. Although these small states contolled maritime trade and much of the coast, effective authority did not extend far inland.

When James Brooke, an English trader and adventurer, arrived in Brunei in the 1840's, the state was in decline. Rebellion had broken out against the Sultanate. Brooke allied himself with the Sultan, using his gunboat to suppress the revolt. In exchange, the Sultan ceded to him a portion of his territory. Brooke become king, or "Rajah", of Sarawak, and over the following decades, as Brunei continued to decline, Sarawak annexed most of the Sultanate's remaining territory. Brooke founded a dynasty that lasted until 1941. During this time, Sarawak was an independent country ruled by a white monarchy. Although the Rajahs were British citizens, Sarawak did not formally become a British colonial possession until after World War II.
When Britain granted independence to Malaysia in 1963, Sarawak (along with Sabah) were included in the new nation. With an area of 124,000 square kilometres, Sarawak constitutes 38% of the national territory. But while Malaysia has a population of 18 million, Sarawak is home to only 1.5 million people.
The people of Sarawak fall into 26 distinct ethnic groups or nations, each with its own language. Most of these peoples are collectively referred to as "Dayaks". Among these are the Iban, Bidayuh, Kenyah, Kayan, Kedayan, Murut, Punan, Bisayah, Kelabit, Berawan and Penan. Most of these Dayak peoples came to Borneo thousands of years ago. Malays and Chinese, who arrived more recently, constitute a large percentage of the coastal and urban population.
Most of the people of Sarawak are sedentary farmers who live in communal longhouses and practice swidden rice agriculture (shifting cultivation). Of the thousands of people who still led a nomadic existence at the end of the nineteenth century, fewer than two hundred Eastern Penan continue to live as wanderers. They are one of the world's few surviving societies of nomads.

The events had been held for more than 5 years and the main reasons why many participants come back to this river are the great scenery and chances to get close up to nature along the ride down the river. Sarawak Laksa

Sarawak Laksa – De Facto State Dish of Sarawak

Sarawak Laksa is the “de-facto” state dish of Sarawak.
Due to lack of worldwide publicity, this cuisine has long been neglected in the ranking of Malaysian cuisines as it is a treasure hidden in the eastern state of Malaysia on the island of Borneo.
Though its popularity has yet to stretch to other States in Malaysia, but it had started to gain popularity internationally.
While Sarawak Laksa had never appeared in any food ranking of Malaysian Cuisines, most people (including Malaysian themselves) may be surprised that as at 30 May, 2013, goggling “Sarawak Laksa” yielded 243,000 results whereas goggling “Assam Laksa” and “Curry Laksa” yielded only 143,000 and 158,000 results respectively.
Worldwide, in big cities like Melbourne, Toronto, restaurants that sells Sarawak cuisines will definitely have Sarawak laksa and its siblings “Kolo Mee” on the menu. In 2012, the Sarawak Tourism Board in its blog polls concerning top 10 iconic foods of Sarawak, Sarawak Laksa comfortably ranked no.1 and followed by Kolo Mee.
Sarawak Laksa is unique in that it is a fusion between Penang Assam Laksa and the Curry Laksa. It is both tamarind based and coconut milk based. It is not as greasy (“lemak”) as curry laksa and it is not as sourish as the Assam Laksa. No people in my circle be it Assam Laksa Lover of Curry laksa lover have ever rejected our offer of Sarawak laksa.
Sarawak Tourism Board gave a very brief but concise definition of Sarawak Laksa as follows:
“The Sarawak Laksa is essentially vermicelli rice noodles (bee hoon), cooked in a shrimp-based broth that is made to thicken with coconut milk. This dish is served with generous amounts of crunchy bean sprouts, a few boiled prawns and garnished with shredded chicken and slivers of egg omelette. For added spice, there’s the thick sambal paste that is usually served on the side. For some extra pizzazz you can squeeze some lime juice (limau kasturi) into your dish as well.”
This treasure have yet to be discovered by both Malaysian and worldwide foodies but asking any tourist or visitors who have ever visited Sarawak, it is unlikely anyone have not tried or forgotten this unique cuisine. It is time that this De-facto Sarawak State Dish be given a status or recognition and introduced to the world officially. The ranking of Malaysian delicacies will not be complete with the omission of Sarawak Laksa.  AYAM PANSOH

Eating local food in Kuching, Sarawak is one of the things every traveler or visitor must try when you are here. The choices are totally different from West Malaysia and Sarawakian Food in very unique in their own ways. You can actually find them at a number of places around Kuching town especially when you walk around the main town. Usually when I visit Kuching town, especially around the Waterfront area, I would explore new restaurants and cafes in search for some exotic Sarawakian food like the Ayam Pansoh in the picture above. This amazing dish is cooked in a bamboo before being served to you
